About

In this module, we’ll build the foundation for confident, independent sewing by exploring the essential tools and materials you’ll need for garment construction. Understanding what each item is for — and how to use it safely and effectively — will help you work with accuracy, efficiency, and creativity. We’ll cover: - Essential hand tools – scissors, shears, pins, needles, seam rippers, tape measures, chalks and markers. - Measuring and marking equipment – rulers, gauges, French curves, pattern weights, tracing tools. - Pressing equipment – irons, pressing cloths, tailor’s hams, sleeve boards, and why pressing is as important as stitching. - Sewing machines and accessories – machine types, presser feet, bobbins, and maintenance basics. - Haberdashery and notions – zips, buttons, elastic, interfacing, bias binding, and threads. - Care and safety – safe handling of sharp tools, electrical equipment, and good studio habits.
