Creating a Matching Jewellery Set Inspired by the Hand & Lock Workshop

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Hand & Lock workshop in Buxton, where I immersed myself in the art of goldwork embroidery. The intricate techniques I learned inspired me to create a matching jewellery set that showcases the beauty of metallic threads in something you can actually wear. If you are a beginner feeling hesitant about trying embroidery, this post is for you! I will share a snapshot of my journey from sketch to finished piece and encourage you to unleash your creativity.

A Spark of Inspiration

At the workshop, I was captivated by the possibilities of goldwork embroidery. The glimmer of metallic threads against richly textured fabrics sparked a desire to create something unique. My goal was to turn these beautiful techniques into a matching jewelry set that would serve as a wearable reminder of my experience, especially since the workshop completely changed my perspective on hand sewing, which I hadn’t enjoyed before.

Let’s start with the idea – I envisioned a necklace and earrings that incorporated goldwork embroidery, with rich colours and texture. The design would be simple but striking, allowing the metallic threads to truly shine.

The Process of Creating My Jewellery Set

Step 1: Sketching My Design

The first step in creating my jewellery set was sketching the design. I took my time to outline the shapes and features of each piece. Here’s a sneak peek of my initial sketches:

Drawing helped me visualise how the embroidery would enhance the overall aesthetic. I focused on symmetry and balance, making sure each piece would complement the others perfectly.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Materials

Once I was satisfied with my designs, I gathered my materials. For the embroidery, I chose a selection of embroidery threads and used the goldwork materials left over from the workshop.

To complete the jewellery set, I found a kit on Amazon that included the necklace, tiny embroidery hoop, selection of threads and the fabric. The kit actually included threads and a design already printed on the fabric that I chose to replace with my own design and materials.

Step 3: Embroidery Techniques

The heart of my project lay in mastering the goldwork embroidery techniques I learned during the workshop. I used stitches like couching to secure the metallic threads onto the fabric. The techniques I included in my design:

  1. Couching: This stitch involves laying down one thread and securing it with another. It is perfect for creating elaborate designs and ensuring the metallic thread stays in place.

  2. Fly Stitch: This stitch creates a beautiful, decorative effect with its elongated, feather-like loops. It adds both dimension and texture to your embroidery, making it perfect for floral designs and intricate patterns.

  3. Stem Stitch with Bullion: This technique combines the stem stitch with bullion knots to create a textured line that is both decorative and dimensional, ideal for outlining shapes and adding intricate details.

  4. Woven Rose Stitch: This stitch creates a lovely rose-like shape by weaving thread over a base stitch, resulting in a beautiful floral motif that can enhance any embroidery project.

  5. French Knot: A classic embroidery stitch that creates small, raised knots, adding texture and detail. French knots are often used to represent flower centers or decorative accents.

  6. Attaching Beads: This technique involves sewing beads onto your fabric to add sparkle and dimension to your embroidery. Beads can be used to embellish designs or create focal points.

  7. Hotfix Rhinestones: These are rhinestones with a heat-activated adhesive on the back. They can be easily applied to fabric using a heat source, adding a glamorous touch to your embroidery projects.

Step 4: Assembling the Jewellery

After finishing the embroidery work, it was time to assemble the jewellery pieces. I carefully attached the embroidered fabric to the metal bases, ensuring everything was securely fastened. This involved a very delicate process using superglue.

The transformation from initial sketches to a finished jewellery set was incredibly rewarding. Every piece sparkled with creativity and passion, and I felt immense pride in my work.

The Power of Metallic Threads

Using metallic threads can significantly elevate a simple design, bringing it to life in unique ways. They catch the light, creating depth and brilliance that standard threads can't replicate. Even beginners can transform basic pieces into showstoppers with a bit of practice and creativity.

Don’t shy away from experimenting with different thread types and colours. Metallic threads can add a striking element to any embroidery project, and you will be amazed at the details they bring to your designs.

Encouragement for Beginners

If you are feeling nervous about starting your embroidery journey, remember that every expert was once a beginner. Set realistic goals and allow yourself the freedom to explore. Join a local crafting group or sign up for workshops to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion.

Consider starting with small projects before tackling something larger like a jewellery set. This approach can help build your confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment. You can gradually incorporate more complex techniques at your own pace.

Sharing Your Creativity

Embroidery is not just a solitary craft; it’s an expression of your creativity that you can share with others. After you complete your jewellery set, consider showcasing it on social media or at local craft fairs. Engaging with a community can inspire and motivate you to keep creating.

Every piece you make helps you grow as an artist. Whether you encounter challenges or celebrate victories, each experience is a step forward in your embroidery journey.
