Pattern Designer Spotlight: Sinclair Patterns

One of the things I love about sewing is the ability to create clothes that actually fit.

As anyone who falls outside standard clothing proportions will know, finding garments that fit well can sometimes feel like an impossible task. While many pattern companies have expanded their size ranges over the years, far fewer cater specifically for different heights.

That's one of the reasons I first discovered Sinclair Patterns.

As someone who needs taller proportions, I was delighted to find a pattern company that not only offered a wide range of sizes but also included dedicated height options across many of its designs. Instead of automatically having to lengthen every pattern before I even started sewing, Sinclair had already done much of that work for me.

It was a refreshing experience and one that immediately made the company stand out.

Meet the Designer

Founded by Laura Mae Designs, Sinclair Patterns has developed a reputation for creating comfortable, practical clothing designed for everyday wear.

Rather than focusing on fast-moving fashion trends, Sinclair's catalogue centres around garments that people genuinely want to wear again and again.

The company has become particularly well known for its knit sewing patterns, wardrobe basics, and commitment to offering fit options for a wide range of body shapes and heights.

Why Sinclair Stood Out To Me

Many sewing patterns can be adjusted for height, but making those adjustments takes time and confidence.

Discovering a pattern company that already offered tall sizing options felt like finding a hidden gem.

One of the things I particularly appreciate about Sinclair is that the company recognises that fit isn't only about body measurements.

Height matters too.

For taller sewists, details such as waist placement, dress lengths, sleeve lengths, and overall proportions can make a huge difference to how a finished garment looks and feels.

Having these options built into the pattern creates a much better starting point.

What Makes Sinclair Patterns Different?

Whenever Sinclair Patterns is discussed in sewing groups and online communities, several features are mentioned repeatedly:

  • Tall sizing options

  • Petite sizing options

  • Inclusive sizing

  • Knit garment expertise

  • Comfortable everyday wear

  • Clear instructions

  • Reliable drafting

The company's commitment to offering different height options sets it apart from many other independent designers.

Rather than treating height adjustments as something sewists should simply figure out themselves, Sinclair actively incorporates these options into many of its designs.

Designed For Real Life

Scrolling through the Sinclair catalogue, you'll find practical garments intended to become wardrobe staples.

These include:

  • Everyday tops

  • Cardigans

  • Dresses

  • Tunics

  • Trousers

  • Loungewear

The emphasis is on wearability, versatility, and comfort.

These are the kinds of garments that work just as well for everyday errands as they do for relaxed weekends or casual workwear.

Popular Sinclair Patterns

Several Sinclair patterns have developed particularly loyal followings within the sewing community.

Harper Cardigan

One of Sinclair's most frequently recommended patterns.

The Harper Cardigan offers a versatile layering piece that works across multiple seasons and fabrics.

Valley Skater Dress

The Valley Skater Dress has become something of a classic among Sinclair fans.

Its comfortable fit and flattering shape have made it one of the company's most recognisable designs.

Kai Semi-Fitted Top

A great example of how a simple wardrobe basic can become a favourite.

The Kai Top is often recommended as a versatile everyday garment that can be sewn repeatedly in different fabrics.

Metro Pull-On Pants

Comfortable, practical, and easy to wear, the Metro Pull-On Pants demonstrate Sinclair's focus on creating clothes for real wardrobes rather than special occasions.

Why Sewists Love Sinclair

One thing that becomes clear when reading reviews and sewing discussions is that Sinclair has developed an incredibly loyal customer base.

Sewists frequently praise:

  • The inclusive size range

  • Height options

  • Excellent knit patterns

  • Everyday practicality

  • Consistent drafting

  • Comfortable fit

For many makers, Sinclair has become a trusted source of wardrobe basics that actually get worn regularly.

Why Sinclair Deserves A Place In This Series

The purpose of Pattern Designer Spotlight is to celebrate designers who make a genuine contribution to the sewing community.

For me, Sinclair deserves a place because they recognise something that is often overlooked: good fit is about more than size alone.

By providing multiple height options alongside thoughtful drafting and practical designs, Sinclair helps sewists start much closer to a successful fit.

As someone who particularly appreciates the availability of tall sizing, that's something I value enormously.

Final Thoughts

Not every designer manages to combine practicality, inclusivity, and wearability quite as successfully as Sinclair Patterns.

While many companies focus solely on size, Sinclair goes a step further by acknowledging that height plays an important role in garment fit too.

For sewists who struggle with standard proportions, that extra consideration can make all the difference.

It's certainly one of the reasons Sinclair remains a designer I continue to recommend and return to.
