Across the course, you will create two garments:
either pants or a skirt, and
either a t‑shirt or tank top.
We will be using the Seamwork Bristol skirt, Seamwork Joss pants, Seamwork Clarke tank top and Seamwork Hansie t‑shirt. If you would prefer to use another pattern, please get in touch.
You’ll receive printed patterns with beginner‑friendly instructions and colour photos, making it easy to continue sewing confidently at home.
Techniques you’ll learn:
- Taking measurements and comparing them to pattern sizes
- Choosing your size
- Making simple pattern alterations
- Understanding pattern pieces
- Choosing and marking fabric
- Cutting fabric
- Creating a variety of seams and hems
- Finishing seams
- Elasticated waistbands
- Darts
- Attaching a facing
Project completion
Sewing speeds vary, so you may not finish both garments within the course, but you will leave with the skills, patterns and instructions needed to complete them confidently at home.
Please ensure you can attend all dates before booking.
Is this right for me?
This course is designed for beginners or returning sewists who want a gentle refresher.
However, you must already have basic machine‑operation experience, as we do not cover how to set up a sewing machine in this class.
It is not suitable for absolute beginners who have never used a sewing machine before.
What do I need to bring?
Fabric for all patterns is included, and if you choose from our selection it will be prewashed for you.
You are very welcome to call into the shop before the course if you’d like to pick a different fabric from our range.
If you prefer to bring your own fabric, please make sure it is prewashed before the course.
You will also need a reel of matching thread, which can be purchased on the day.
Fabric requirements will be emailed on request if you are bringing your own fabric.
Please bring lunch if you’re here for the day—we have a fridge, microwave, and kettle available.
Bringing your sewing machine
You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine, but please remember to bring the instruction manual.
If you’d prefer not to carry your machine, you are very welcome to use one of ours during the course.
What’s included?
- Patterns and instructions for both garments
- Fabric for both garments (prewashed if chosen from our selection)
- Elastic
- Interfacing
- Use of all tools and equipment
- Tea and coffee
If you choose to bring your own fabric, please ensure it is prewashed beforehand.
You need to make sure at checkout to choose which garment option you will be making, select your dress size, and choose your fabric, so that the correct sized pattern and your chosen fabric are ready for you on the day.
