Dressmaking for Beginners

Class Description
This class is the ideal follow‑on from our Absolute Beginners Sewing Class and is perfect for confident beginners who can already set up and operate a sewing machine independently.
During the session, you will create either pyjama bottoms/shorts or a gathered skirt, working step‑by‑step through a beginner‑friendly pattern.
This workshop is an excellent first dressmaking project or a gentle refresher for returning sewists, helping you build practical skills you can use again and again.
You’ll receive a printed pattern with clear instructions and colour photos showing each stage, making it easy to continue sewing confidently at home.
We will cover:
- Taking accurate measurements and comparing them to pattern sizes
- Understanding pattern pieces
- Cutting your fabric
- Optional in‑seam pockets
- Elasticated waistbands
- And much more!
Please note: Sewing speeds vary, so project completion is not guaranteed within the session — but you will leave with everything you need to finish confidently at home.
Is this right for me?
This class is a wonderful starting point for anyone who wants to begin dressmaking or start making their own clothes. It’s ideal for beginners who are ready to take their first steps into garment construction, or for returning sewists who’d like a gentle refresher.
However, to join this workshop you must already be able to set up and operate a sewing machine confidently.
Machine basics are not taught in this class, and it is not suitable for absolute beginners. You must have either completed our Absolute Beginners Class or have equivalent experience using a sewing machine independently.
This ensures you can focus on learning dressmaking techniques and enjoy creating your first garment without struggling with machine setup.
What do I need to bring?
You do not need to bring fabric unless you have chosen to use your own.
Fabric is included in the cost, and you’ll select your preferred option after booking. If you decide to bring your own, please make sure it is prewashed before the workshop.
You will also need matching thread, which can be purchased in the shop on the day if you prefer.
Feel free to bring a bite to eat — we have a fridge, microwave, and kettle available for your use.
Fabric requirements can be sent on request if you are bringing your own fabric.

Please check the dates carefully prior to booking. Once an order is placed it cannot be refunded.
If for any reason you are unable to attend please contact us and we will try to find someone to take your place. Golden Rose Sewing School is not contractually obliged to find a replacement but we can try to find someone as a gesture of good will. If this is not possible feel free to send a substitute. If you book a class for several days duration please make sure you can attend all days. Once made, a booking cannot be transferred to an alternative date.
All classes must be paid for in full either prior to the event or on the day of the event. If you have paid a deposit this is non-refundable.
Payment for the deposit can be made on the website. Payments for the remaining balance can be paid by bank transfer or by card at the school. We do not store or have access to your bank details. This is securely processed by Wix payments and Sumup.
In the unlikely event that a class is cancelled, we will attempt to give as much warning as possible. We will email you and phone you if you have provided us with a telephone number. We will refund your booking fee or transfer you to another class of the same value, space permitting. Unfortunately, we cannot accept responsibility for wasted travel cost.
